A friend of mine used to say:

Here's an old chinese proverb I just came up with:

The one who doesn't know and doesn't know he doesn't know, is stupid

The one who doesn't know but does know he doesn't know, already knows something

The one who does know but doesn't know he does know doesn't profit

The one who does know and does know he does know profits from the one who doesn't know and doesn't know he doesn't know, the one who doesn't know but does know he doesn't know, and the one who does know but doesn't know he does know

Apparently, it's a cynic turn (pretty much in the style of XVI-century Spain), of an actual much more well-intentioned eastern proverb, attributed to either Ibn Yamin (a poet of the XIV century) or Al-Ghazali (a sufi philosopher of the XI century):

A man who doesn't know and doesn't know he doesn't, is a stupid, get away from him!

A man who doesn't know but is aware of it, is an ignorant, teach him!!

A man who does know but is unaware of it, is asleep, wake him!

A man who does know and is aware of it, is wise, follow him!

The original suits me best, but I find the first such a funnier presentation!
